Eric's Blu Review: Monsters University Collector's Edition

Disney and Pixar have released one of the most anticipated sequels, Monsters University, on Blu-ray and DVD. I have only one question after taking it in. How can a follow-up to such a highly regarded movie seem so stale when filmmakers had nearly 12 years to come up with a good storyline? What we get instead is an uninspired family-friendly rehash of Revenge of the Nerds and Revenge of the Nerds 2: Nerds in Paradise.

Ever since childhood, Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) wanted only one thing in life. He wanted to attend Monsters University and become a great Scarer. His dreams are shattered when he meets James P. Sullivan, "Sulley" (John Goodman), and their competitive natures get them kicked out of the college's Scare Program. Now the two must find a way to work together and get themselves back into the running to fulfill their lifelong goals.

Monsters University might falter in its story, but it excels with a fabulous audio and video presentation. The picture is clean and the color scheme of the film pops out at you. The Dolby TrueHD 7.1 surround sound puts the audience right in the middle of all the onscreen antics and noise you would expect to hear at a Scare School.

There are plenty of special features for Monsters University. Audio commentary is provided by Director/Co-writer Dan Scanlon, Producer Kori Rae, and Story Supervisor Kelsey Mann. Eleven featurettes explore different aspects of the making of the film. Deleted scenes, art galleries, and promo picks are also included. Pixar's latest short, Blue Umbrella, is featured as well.

Kids will love Monsters University and that's really all that matters. However, their parents might feel as if they're watching a watered-down children's version of Revenge of the Nerds or Animal House without all the dirty jokes. It's harmless fun for the kids but slightly tiresome for adults.

Monsters University is available on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray Collector's Edition, Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, and as a Digital Download.
