Activision almost let Sledgehammer make Advanced Warfare 2 before going back to WWII.
Turns out that Activision either listened to their fans, or the fact Infinite Warfare sales were not too great, and canned an early bid for Advanced Warfare 2. According to Activision, COD WWII developers Sledgehammer Games had proposed the idea of making Advanced Warfare 2, but the publisher instead wanted to go back to WWII.
"We knew they would become historians, that they would tackle it with authenticity, give it tremendous care, and we also knew they would capture the unspeakable scale of World War II."
It isn’t mentioned if the idea was actually canned, or if they simply just sent them straight to WWII instead, but the idea seemed to work. COD WWII has already surpassed sales targets of Infinite Warfare and is on track to quickly sell more units than the previous installment. Fans, and reviewers, have loved WWII due to the authenticity of the war, combined with great perks of the boots on the ground experience. In our review we note that the game revives everything that made the franchise great, and throws polish over it all to make things even better.
It seems clear that Infinite Warfare had actually done well then we would be playing Advanced Warfare 2 right now instead of WWII and Nazi Zombies.
It seems Activision has a tricky road to follow with the franchise from this point, but it is becoming clear that the series most likely won’t be returning to the future any time soon. Activision called Infinite Warfare a mistake by releasing at the wrong time.
We aren’t complaining either, we personally love COD WWII.
