Nintendo brought it, during their Nintendo Direct, as the gaming giant revealed tons of new, original games coming to Nintendo Switch, including Super Smash Bros.!
If there was any doubt that Nintendo wouldn't be able to pull off a successful sophomore campaign with the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo addressed those with today's Nintendo Direct. The Direct had everything a gaming connoisseur could possibly want. They showed us a few titles we've known about (like Kirby Star Allies) and managed to make a Tennis game look amazing in Mario Tennis Aces, but the best thing they showed us, during the 30-minute Direct, was a teaser for a Switch version of Super Smash Bros.!
While gameplay would've been great, the fact that we're getting this in 2018 has me giddier than 10 year old me was when the original Super Smash Bros. released on Nintendo 64! As an added bonus, we're getting Splatoon 2 characters ported in, along with a The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild version of Link! I can only imagine that the Mario silhouette we saw includes a version of Cappy! Let the possession begin!
In addition to this monumental announcement, Nintendo spent a majority of their time showing us Original games that will be released on Nintendo Switch later this year, but none looked nearly as fun as Mario Tennis Aces!
Prior to the Nintendo Direct, Nintendo announced that they would be detailing Mario Tennis Aces. Boy, were they right! They ended up giving us a 5 minute video, breaking down everything you need to know about Mario Tennis Aces, and it was surprisingly thrilling! Who knew a Tennis game could be so fun? I mean, I loved Mario Tennis on the Nintendo 64, but Aces raises the bar to a whole other level. Thankfully, we won't have to wait too long to play, as Mario Tennis Aces releases June 22, 2018.
If you can't wait that long, though, Nintendo plans on releasing a demo for the game in the form of the Mario Tennis Aces Pre-Launch Online Tournament! More details will be divulged later, but to participate, players just have to download the Pre-launch Online Tournament in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch.
Another major announcement to come out of the Direct, was the inside scoop on the first paid DLC for Splatoon 2 that features a new single-player mode, putting players in the shoes of a new character, Agent 8!
This campaign encompasses 80 missions as you work your way to finding Agent 8's lost memories. Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion will release this summer, but Splatoon 2 fans can pre-order it now to get access to Octo-themed gear to take into battle! Nintendo is also planning to release a free Splatoon 2 update in April that will add 100+ new pieces of gear, more stages rolling out throughout spring (Piranha Pit, Camp Triggerfish and Wahoo World) and a new rank (Rank X). Rank X is an extreme rank, even higher than S+!
The other two original games that were featured in Nintendo's 2018 rundown were Kirby Star Allies and an interesting game from Square Enix, called Octopath Traveler.
Producer Masashi Takahashi from SQUARE ENIX revealed new details about the upcoming RPG, including the final game name, Octopath Traveler, two more main characters (Tressa the Merchant and Alfyn the Apothecary) and the ability to equip multiple jobs per character for use in battle. Octopath Traveler launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch on July 13. Octopath Traveler: Wayfarer’s Edition, a special edition bundle that includes a stylized pop-up book, a helpful cloth map, the Octopath Traveler: Sound Selections CD and a replica coin based on the in-game currency, launches the same day.
If this Direct was any indication, 2018 is going be another big year for Nintendo Switch with these mega releases! We knew it could be great, but who knew it could be this great?
