After 40 years, Atari is finally releasing a brand-new console and upon first glance, it looks sleek while keeping its trademark look!
Oh the good ol' days, going home from school, jumping on the Atari and playing Pong. These are the days that I don't remember, because that was about 30-40 years ago. Nevertheless, the iconic company is making a comeback! For months there have been rumblings out of the San Francisco offices of Atari that they would be releasing a brand-new console, code-named Ataribox. Today, Atari unveiled the system that's 40 years in the making, the Atari VCS!
The remarkable thing about the Atari VCS (based on the 2600 Video Computer System) is its blend of past and modern gaming. Just the console itself is reminiscent of the original system that was revolutionary, at its time. However, it maintains the sleek design that gaming has trended towards. The controller has the design of the Xbox 360 controller. The piece de resistance of this, though, is the joystick. It looks updated, but just including it at all means that Atari is firm on their stance of remembering where they came from.
“Every person at Atari and every partner involved with the new platform is just as fanatical about the brand and its heritage as our biggest fans are,” explained Michael Arzt, Atari COO of Connected Devices. “With the Atari VCS name, we know how important it is to get everything completely right and that’s why we briefly paused an imminent launch late last year. It was a difficult decision with the countdown underway, but we weren’t willing to go forward with even one thing out of alignment. We hope that Atari’s fans appreciate our extreme attention to detail and are as excited about the Atari VCS as we are.”
No games have been announced, but Atari plans on updating us with a pre-order date sometime in April. Keep it here for more news on the Atari VCS!
