God of War’s Progression System Shown, Customization is Key!

God of War has really changed and boy are we ready for it!

In the latest God of War trailer, Jason Mcdonald (Lead Gameplay Designer) and Cory Barlog (Creative Director) talk about the overhauled progression system in the game. The fans have more than just a new style of gameplay and location to be excited for, Kratos can now be customized to your liking!

We're not just talking about changing his appearance, the customization you choose in the game will affect your style of gameplay. As with many Action RPG's, the progression system lets you choose what style of weapon and gear your character can have in-game.

Depending on who or what your fighting, you may have to strategize and change your items on the fly if the enemy is a different class, dealing different damage.

Barlog and the team have stated that they took a good look at games like Dark Souls and thought it could work well in the God of War Saga. I think we can all agree that this is a change we didn't know we needed but are glad it is happening.

In a recent Blog post, the team has also released some details on the difficulty and HUD options in the game. Below you will see all the difficulties that you can choose from and more info on a mode called "Immersive Mode".

GOD OF WAR DIFFICULTIES

  • Give Me A Story: lets you experience the story without too much of a difficult gameplay challenge. You won’t be taking a gondola to the top of the highest peaks in all the Norse Realms, but you will have a far greater margin for error in enemy encounters.
  • Give Me A Balanced Experience: is the mode we’d recommend most players start with. The name says it all. We’ve tuned it to deliver a balanced, challenging playthrough.
  • Give Me A Challenge: is harder and less forgiving. It is recommended for players who find action games extremely intuitive, and for confident long-time God of War series veterans who’ve beat past games on harder difficulties.
  • Give Me God of War: is the sort of thing reserved for people who wrestle polar bears in their undies. Maybe not quite that, but it’s the most difficult mode in the game. We haven’t just made you weaker or enemies stronger; we’ve looked at enemy behaviors and placements in encounters as well, tweaking everything to make it as threatening as possible. Best of all, you cannot change difficulties once you start a game on this mode, so if you suddenly realize you’re in way over your head, you’ll have to start a new game. Don’t be sorry, be better?

Immersion Mode – Just The Necessary HUD elements

As Cory mentioned in interviews, we’ve included what we’re calling Immersion Mode. This will cut things down to just the minimal absolute necessary HUD elements. There’s no right or wrong way to play; you’ll certainly have a lot of helpful info close at hand if you’re playing with the HUD fully enabled. But for those fans who are sensitive to the HUD, or perhaps for folks who want to stream or capture and would prefer as little UI as possible, there you go. To enable Immersive UI, it’s as easy as going to the Settings menu, clicking HUD and switching HUD Mode to Immersive. Yes, that means you can toggle it on and off while you play!
