Following a leak earlier this week, Microsoft formally announced that they've developed a new controller, geared toward gamers with disabilities. See it in action below...
In the minds of many average gamers, the industry has become somewhat of a "What have you done for me lately" kind of place. No video game company has felt the brunt of that more than Microsoft, with the gaming community clamoring for more Xbox exclusives. Yet, today's news proves that Microsoft has grander designs than just unveiling a new game you're destined to enjoy for 20+ hours before you move on to the next one. They want to create an inclusive world for gamers of all types to enjoy, and that's exactly what they've accomplished with the Xbox Adaptive Controller.
The Xbox Adaptive Controller was designed with the gamers in mind who have a variety of disabilities and struggle with the conventional controller. With this new controller, this underrepresented gaming community will have the opportunity play all that Xbox has to offer, by utilizing the various plug-ins that come standard with the base unit. Plug-ins like a bigger joystick, larger buttons, foot pedals, and many others allow for complete customization to create a comfortable and enjoyable gaming experience. They even have a video showing it in action with real people who share their own struggles.
As gamers, we take for granted the simple pleasures of being able to game however and whenever we want, and we never stop to wonder how the rest of the world gets by. This video shows us and it's beautiful to see the joy in the faces of these incredible people, as they experience new worlds and stories within the virtual world we all enjoy. Included in the announcement is a lengthy, but wonderful article, on Xbox Blog, about how the Xbox Adaptive Controller was designed. It's definitely worth your time.
Love them or loath them, you have to love what Microsoft is doing for the community. While average gamers ask, "What have you done for me lately?", Microsoft is asking the more important question, "How can we help everyone play video games?". The Xbox Adaptive Controller seems like the perfect answer.
Microsoft says that the Xbox Adaptive Controller will be available later this year for the retail price of $100.
