God of War Wins Game of the Year; Best Direction at TGA 2018

God of War Wins Game of the Year; Best Direction at TGA 2018

During an evening that celebrated every incredible game that came out in 2018, it was the odds on favorite, God of War that claimed the top prize of the night!  More within...

2018 was a huge year for gaming.  Tons of quality games provided millions of gamers with memorable experiences to share with the rest of the gaming community.  For developers, several years of blood, sweat, and tears paid off when their game finally hit shelves, to the delight of the masses.  The 5th Annual Game Awards set out to honor those who worked (and continue to work) so hard to give us these lasting experiences with nominations, platforms to talk about their process, and of course the highly-sought after award.

Early on in the night, Red Dead Redemption 2 looked to have the most momentum, as they secured 3 awards for Best Narrative, Best Score, and Best Audio Design.  However, no one can ever count out the former God of War, as Kratos & co. stole the rest of the evening by claiming Best Action/Adventure, Best Direction, and the top prize of Game of the Year.  They even stole the show as Christopher Judge (Kratos) and Sunny Suljic (Atreus "Boy") took to the stage to announce the winner of Best Content Creator.

As now-Award-winning Director Cory Barlog stated, any one of these games could've took home the top prize.  That's how great of a year it was for games.  That being said, God of War truly was most deserving of the top prize.  Barlog & co. took this previously one-note character in Kratos and gave him such depth in an adventure that was so gritty, captivating, and heart-warming.  However, the character wasn't just about him.  They had a tough task of giving Atreus, Kratos' son, a platform to grow before our eyes from child trying to prove himself to his father to becoming a capable warrior.  Moreover, the seamless way they built this world was a triumph of massive preportions.  Add that to the graphics, the music, and combat mechanics, and God of War was simply a masterpiece deserving of the top spot in 2018.
