As we continue to look ahead in the new year and all it has to offer, we're talking about the video games we're looking forward to picking up the most in 2016 (hopefully). Come inside to take a gander at our choices.
It's kind of funny, that as we were preparing this article, we already had a BIG game, Scalebound get hit with a delay out of 2016. Such is the way of things when it comes to the gaming industry, where titles can be delayed for siginifcantly longer periods of time than other media out there.
Despite that quick and poignant reminder, however, we're still hopeful that the games we each chose to place on our lists. Check out some of our team members' choices and be sure to share your own (and don't forget to check out our anticipated movie lists):
Jordan: There were some awesome games that landed this past year, but looking ahead, I can’t help but feel all tingly as some of my favorite franchises are being brought back, and some new goodies are on the way. While a couple of these don’t have official 2016 release dates, I’m crossing my fingers they don’t get hit with a big delay.
Mass Effect: Andromeda - I love the Mass Effect franchise, and have been waiting eagerly for Bioware to show us what they have in store next. They’ve said it’ll be hitting around the holidays next year, and I’m in desperate need of my Sci-Fi gaming fix.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End - Naughty Dog has proven they have the chops to deliver on great stories with engaging gameplay. I’ve been following the Uncharted franchise from the start and glad they’re coming back to wrap up the series on the new platform. Let’s just hope it delivers!
No Man’s Sky - Starfighter style games have always been huge with me, and for the last few years No Man’s Sky has been teasing gamers with something amazing. All of it’s gameplay has looked impressive and left me aching to get my hands on it.
Horizon: Zero Dawn - This was easily my favorite reveal from E3 2015, and it’s subsequent gameplay footage has left me with my jaw on the floor. The story looks engaging, with some gameplay mechanics that look incredibly fun. I can’t wait to play in this world.
Star Fox Zero - Star Fox is a franchise I’ve been following since I was a kid. I played the original SNES game almost until the cartridge, and its absence over the last console generation has been painful. As such, I’m eager to see if the Wii U game will bring Star Fox back into prominence, and hopefully not the final nail in its coffin.
There are obviously more I’m looking forward to (like whatever the next Star Wars game will be), but as 2016 is just getting underway, these are the ones I’ve most definitely boarded the hype train for.
Matt: In 2015, I attended the Electronics Entertainment Expo, or E3. One of my biggest takeaways was an overwhelming feeling of anxiety. We were just so far away from so many incredible games coming out! Well now, I can safely say that I may be even more anxious because we’re so close to these awesome games coming out! Without further ado, here are my 5 picks for most anticipated games of 2016.
Tom Clancy’s The Division - I’m still not entirely convinced that this is an actual game. For a few years, we have been given a series of well done trailers. However, after suffering a few delays, we finally have a release date for the post-outbreak game. The Division is set in a world after a horrible illness has eradicated much of the population. Crime has taken over and the only people that can stop them is a secret underground division created for situations like this.
Unravel - Unravel was one of my favorite games shown at E3. It’s relatively small, modest game but has tremendous heart. It’s a puzzle game with a powerful meaning behind it. You play as a small red yarn character named Yarny. Players control Yarny as he runs around his giant world, capturing memories, solving puzzles, and saving creatures.
No Man’s Sky - I’ve been pumped about this game for a few years now. No Man’s Sky may be the biggest game ever created. The whole point of the game is to explore and discover the massive universe they’ve created. One of the cool things about No Man’s Sky is that no two people will ever have the same experience as every player begins their journey from a completely other part of the universe. It’s a truly original game and I for one can’t wait any longer for it.
Mass Effect: Andromeda - I can’t tell you how excited I am to continue exploring the Mass Effect universe with Andromeda. We had heard rumors about it but it really hit home when we saw concept art during E3 2015. As of now, it has a December release date but I have my doubts that it will be released on time, especially after their Senior Development Director left recently. With all the negative press received from ME3, I think they’ll take their time with Andromeda just so they get everything right.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End - The Legend of Zelda Wii U could come out in the next week and Uncharted 4 would still be the game I’m most anticipating, and I’m a huge Zelda fan! In fact, Uncharted 4 was the reason I even bought a PS4. That’s how much I’m ready for this game. Naughty Dog has always done an excellent job with this series and I’m confident this game will be just as good, if not the best in the series.
This list was surprisingly hard to make as there are so many other games I’m excited to play. It just means we’re living in the Golden Age of Gaming and we should all rejoice that there are this many games to be excited for!
Dustin: I have to be careful because 2015 looked like a good year for some classics to return to their prime, but I was rather disappointed with almost all of the reboots. 2016 looks a bit better though thanks to the fact that most of the hot releases are either new IP’s or have been in development for some time. (Doom, Kingdom Hearts, etc) So I actually had trouble boiling this down to 5 games and had to leave out some great titles, that’s always a good sign for any gamer!
ReCore – During E3 there were a few titles that got me excited, but new IP’s are almost always exciting. ReCore is actually a game that made me really want to go out and buy an Xbox One. The game is made by the same designer of Mega Man which is a childhood favorite of mine, so ReCore seriously does have the potential to become something truly great. The technical features and science fiction approach are really enticing as well.
Doom – Honestly above everything releasing this next year, Doom tops it all. I grew up with Doom and I’m sure many other gamers have too. I already got a chance to play some early versions of the game and my goodness is everyone in for an absolute treat! This game is going to be everything a Doom fan has ever wanted!
Ghost Recon: Wildlands – Another true surprise at E3 was the reveal of Ghost Recon. I honestly think it may be delayed like Rainbow Six, but then again who knows! Rainbow Six was easily my top shooter of 2015 and I expect Ghost Recon to put Ubisoft at the top again in 2016. Hopefully we actually get a story though!
Horizon: Zero Dawn – This was easily the best looking game at E3 and follow up showings at later shows just made me love it even more! The world they put this character in and the mechanics look so enticing! I got more excited for Horizon than almost anything else thanks to the gameplay!
Kingdom Hearts 3 – I get super excited whenever Square Enix actually teases us with anything Kingdom Hearts, and to see Tangled coming to life in the new game was enough to make me jump for joy! Now we get teases that Star Wars and Marvel might also get included in some way, man this game is just going to be awesome! They had me at Tangled, and then just made me throw money at them with everything else!
Honorable Mentions (Picks From Other Team Members Who Couldn't Join for a Full List):
The Last Guardian
Final Fantasy XV
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Mirror's Edge Catalyst
From the looks of things (as it is right now), 2016 will offer plenty of great titles to occupy gamers. Which ones are you most excited to finally get your hands on?
