The powers-that-be at Legendary Pictures feel that having the red-hot Christopher Nolan (The Batman trilogy, Inception, Insomnia, Momento) participating in a film project is more valuable than the combined drawing power of Batman and Superman put together.
An article from ‘The Wrap’ has disclosed that Legendary Pictures made the choice so sacrifice their financial stake in the highly anticipated Man of Steel sequel, which will star Hendy Cavill and Ben Affleck as Superman and Batman, in order to invest their funds for a sizable piece of Nolan’s upcoming sci-fi film Interstellar. The recent split between Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers doesn’t end their collaborations until 2014, so Legendary still had an option to get a piece of Man of Steel 2, but they calculated that Nolan’s project was the better investment.
The plot of Interstellar revolves around space ships that use wormholes for intergalactic travel. Interstellar is being co-produced by Paramount Pictures and Warner Brothers. Since Legendary Pictures decided to end their eight year union with Warner Brothers by signing a 5-year film partnership with Universal Pictures, this deal will allow Legendary and Warner Brothers to stay in business together a little bit longer. Legendary Pictures has been involved in every movie Nolan has made since Batman Begins, with the exception of the Prestige. While Legendary Pictures has announced an end to their partnership with Warner Brothers, they are not willing to cut their ties with the mega-successful Nolan.
Nolan’s film will star the powerhouse cast of Jessica Chastain, Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Ellen Burstyn, Topher Grace, John Lithgow, Casey Affleck, Wes Bentley, David Oyelowo and film icon Michael Caine. It is due for release on November 7th, 2014.
