December of this year was already stacked with some impressive releases and it looks like Fox didn’t want one of theirs getting lost in the shuffle. As such, Alita: Battle Angel will no longer arrive later this year. Instead, the long gestating project will now hit theaters on February 14, 2019. Just enough space from the big holiday releases without delving into Spring/Summer territory.
But wait…that date sounds familiar. Dark Phoenix, which JUST released a trailer yesterday (and had been delayed from earlier THIS year), had previously occupied that date, but will now be a Summer film. The new X-Men film will land on June 7, 2019, which had been previously earmarked for the Gambit solo movie they’ve been desperate to get off the ground.
For some reason, even admist the process of being bought out by Disney, and losing a number of directors, Fox is still trying to push ahead with the Gambit movie. They now have the Cajun mutant’s film slated for March 13, 2020. Considering Gambit has had release dates all the back in 2016, I’m still not holding my breath for it happening…but who knows!
Lastly, and somewhat surprising, Fox has decided to fill Alita‘s spot (December 21st) with what they have listed as “Untitled Deadpool Movie.” Turns out this is going to be a PG-13 version of Deadpool 2. That’s…interesting. Supposedly it’s an experiment to see how the Merc With a Mouth might work in a more restricted setting, while allowing younger comic fans the chance to enjoy it.
It’s a lot of shuffling around, but hopefully the wait will be worth it. It’s crazy to think they’d change the date of Dark Phoenix literally right after finally showing us a trailer for it, but that’s how it is sometimes! What do you think about these changes?
