In late October, the first trailer for Vox Lux, starring Natalie Portman, Jude Law, and Raffey Cassidy, debuted, following adult Celeste making her comeback, or rebirth as she likes to call it. About four weeks removed from that fascinating trailer, comes a jaw-dropping new one that shows how the young teenager, Celeste, rose to fame. Vox Lux is being regarded as the best performance by Natalie Portman and, by the looks of this latest trailer, that narrative doesn’t seem to be in jeopardy.
However, as Portman understandably shines, the trailer primarily focuses on the young star-in-the-making, Raffey Cassidy, and she absolutely owns the spotlight. This is Vox Lux.
VOX LUX begins in 1999 when teenage sisters Celeste (Raffey Cassidy) and Eleanor (Stacy Martin) survive a seismic, violent tragedy. The sisters compose and perform a song about their experience, making something lovely and cathartic out of catastrophe — while also catapulting Celeste to stardom. By 2017, the now 31-year-old Celeste (Natalie Portman) is mother to a teenage daughter of her own and struggling to navigate a career fraught with scandals when another act of terrifying violence demands her attention.
The category of Best Original Score in the 2019 Academy Awards may be a little more competitive than previously thought. Back in October, the thought around Hollywood was that the musical, fictional “biopic”, A Star is Born featuring music by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, would dominate the music category. As the trailer hints, Vox Lux will incorporate loads of original songs by award-winning artist Sia, which with the December 7, 2018 select release date, should just make the cut and be in the conversation when awards season rolls around.
Vox Lux premieres in NY/LA December 7, 2018 and everywhere else December 14, 2018!
