When it was announced that X-Force would follow Deadpool 2, comic fans were thrilled with the idea that they’d finally see the ruthless version of the X-Men on the big screen. Who would see that vision through, though? Continuing with 20th Century Fox‘s trend of tapping up and coming directors for their superhero films, Fox has hired highly-acclaimed writer, Drew Goddard, to direct and write the upcoming X-Force film, according to an exclusive report by Deadline.
Goddard is no stranger to the superhero genre, having penned the spin-off of The Amazing Spider-man, The Sinister Six. While that ultimately didn’t pan out, Goddard has continued to have success in Hollywood. His resume includes writing for The Martian, World War Z, Netflix’s Marvel shows, and even Cabin in the Woods.
However, his directing credentials are a bit more bare, only having Cabin in the Woods and Fox’s Bad Times at the El Royale. He would’ve had The Martian if he hadn’t stepped aside for, sci-fi legend, Ridley Scott. Now, once he finishes Bad Times at the El Royale, he’ll jump right into his 3rd film X-Force.
X-Force will be produced by Ryan Reynolds, Simon Kinberg, and Lauren Shuler Donner with the main focal characters being Deadpool and Josh Brolin’s Cable, who Kinberg said would have a major component in the film. No doubt, we’ll have some sort of lead-in to X-Force when Deadpool 2 comes out next year.
2018 is shaping up to Fox’s superhero year with X-Men: New Mutants on April 13, Deadpool 2 on June 1, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix on November 2. X-Force will most likely land in 2019, if all goes well.
