Eighteen Films Are Eligible for the Best Animated Film Oscar This Year: Who Will Come Out Victorious?

So first things first, here’s the complete list of potential nominees.  Although you probably shouldn’t take the term “potential” to seriously…does anyone REALLY think crap like Mars Needs Moms or The Smurfs will get a nom?  That’s what I thought.

Anyways, the list:

  • Rango
  • Cars 2
  • Mars Needs Moms
  • The Smurfs
  • Arthur Christmas
  • Kung Fu Panda 2
  • Puss in Boots
  • Rio
  • Hoodwinked 2: Hood vs. Evil
  • Gnomeo and Juliet
  • Winnie the Pooh
  • The Adventures of Tintin
  • Happy Feet Too
  • Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked
  • Alois Nebel
  • A Cat in Paris
  • Chico and Rita
  • Wrinkles

So yeah, you got your usual suspects here: the obligatory Pixar film, the trying SO hard Dreamworks films, the films that won’t have a shot in hell but go for it anyways, and the crazy foreign films that are hoping for some recognition with the nomination.  They are all here.  However, which ones will get a coveted spot in the Top 5?

Well, I think Rango is a guaranteed; if it doesn’t get a nomination, I think the audience would revolt.  Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if Rango walked away with the win.  Cars 2 will probably be their as well, just because it’s a Pixar film (although I don’t think it will win, making this the first time in five years that a non-Pixar movie will win Best Animated Feature).  I also think Tintin will get a nom, just because it’s Steven Spielberg.

That makes choosing the last two films even harder.  I think a foreign film could easily slide in their, but I haven’t heard a thing about any of the three films, so I don’t know.  Of the “serious” options, that leaves Winnie the Pooh, Arthur Christmas, Kung Fu Panda 2, and Happy Feet Too. Both Happy Feet and Kung Fu Panda got nods for their original films a couple years ago, with Happy Feet even walking away with the win.  So if I was a betting man, I would say those two will occupy the last two spots.  Which would make my list as follows:

Winner: Rango

Nominees: Rango, Cars 2, The Adventures of Tintin, Happy Feet Too, and Kung Fu Panda 2.

Yup, lot of “2s” in there.  So what do you think?  Are my picks sound, or do you think a dark horse will somehow slip through the cracks?
