This evening brings the first teaser trailer for the long-gestating Maleficent sequel, giving us our first look at the villainess’ return and the new journey.
Earlier this year, Disney announced Maleficent: Mistress of Evil would be arriving THIS year instead of 2020 and since then, we’ve been eager to see some footage. Well, tonight brings our first teaser that offers plenty of magical creatures and action:
Honestly, this trailer does nothing in terms of giving us info about the new story…But it’s still pretty damn good. It’s good to see Angelina Jolie back in action as the iconic villain and just owning the crap out of that role.
Funny enough, I actually re-watched Maleficent over the weekend and was struck by how much I really enjoyed it. You may remember that the first Maleficent kicked off the new crop of animation-to-live-action Disney films and for my money it’s still one of the best.
Instead of simply retelling the same story, it sought to tell it from a different perspective and changes things up. It was more than a simple remake and I loved how it redeemed the villain…Which makes me all the more curious about what’s going on in Mistress of Evil‘s story. When the first movie ended, the kingdom was in harmony and Maleficent no longer needing to do bad things.
The teaser obviously doesn’t offer much, but thankfully the new plot synopsis sure does:
“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” is a fantasy adventure that picks up several years after “Maleficent,” in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora. The film continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil hits theaters on October 18, 2019.
