While Pennywise may be the stuff of nightmares for the children of Derry, Maine, Stephen King’s demon clown happened to be the savior of the box office, after a rough August. Earning $478.1 million, worldwide, and positive reviews from fans and critics, the priority of New Line and Warner Bros. was to immediately start working on the sequel.
IT 2 is expected to see the return of director Andy Muschietti and producers Barbara Muschietti, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Seth Graham-Smith, and David Katzenberg. That team will join writer Gary Dauberman, who is working on the script, for a new release date of September 6, 2019.
While IT 1 focused on the group of kids from Derry, King’s sequel centers around them as adults. It’ll be interesting to see who they bring in to play the adult versions of the Loser’s Club, but it’s important to note that the children will still have a place in Chapter 2.
Director Andy Muschietti stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the kids won’t be just a throwback but that, “They’re a very big part of the action,” he says.
Bill Skarsgard is expected to come back as Pennywise in this IT sequel.
