X-Men: Dark Phoenix Gets A New Director and Several Returning Castmembers

20th Century Fox is ready to continue the X-Men franchise!  They've found a familiar friend who will take up the mantle as director and re-signed a slew of previous cast-members, including Jennifer Lawrence, for X-Men: Dark Phoenix!

Once X-Men: Apocalypse wrapped, Bryan Singer walked away from the franchise, leading 20th Century Fox to look for his replacement.  Meanwhile, many believed that this would be Jennifer Lawrence's last hurrah as the blue-skinned shapeshifter, Mystique.  It's amazing what more than a year can do, as Fox has not only found their director to replace Singer, but has also managed to sign Lawrence and most of her co-stars.

In an exclusive report from Deadline, long-time producer Simon Kinberg will make his directorial debut in X-Men: Dark Phoenix.  The film will star Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Charles Xavier), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler).  Jessica Chastain is also in talks to play the villain, Lilandra the Empress of the Shi'ar, according to sources close to THR.  Lilandra's purpose is to find the Dark Phoenix and execute her.

Dark Phoenix will mark the second time Fox has tried to pull off the Dark Phoenix storyline.  2006's X-Men: The Last Stand saw a poor excuse for a Dark Phoenix attempt, causing Fox to expunge it from the record books with X-Men: Days of Future Past

Fortunately, Fox has done well with these updated X-Men movies, and they clearly seem motivated to pull off a better Dark Phoenix adaptation.  With a lot of the castmembers returning and Simon Kinberg in the fold, they could make a Dark Phoenix film we can be proud of.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will shoot soon to meet a November 2, 2018 release date.
