We now know why Fast 9 is being pushed back another year, Universal is developing a Fast & Furious spin-off. More news inside!
Arguably, one of the best parts of Fate of the Furious was the dynamic between Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs and Jason Statham's Shaw. At the start of the film, they were sworn enemies out to tear each other apart but, in a surprise twist, their bond of blood turned to a bromance of epic proportions. Not one to let an opportunity to put these two superstars in their own movie, Universal capitalized on this bromance, at the expense of the franchise that pit them against each other in the first place.
Universal Pictures has announced that a Fast & Furious spin-off is in the works for a July 26. 2019 release with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham as the leads. Chris Morgan, Fast & Furious franchise director, is penning the script while the deals for Johnson and Statham get finalized.
While it makes sense on a box office stand-point, it's odd that these two ever became friends in the first place. For one, they were enemies in Furious 7 after Shaw straight-up murdered Han. Shaw, then, gets put in prison, only to be joined by Hobbs after he's wrongly convicted. The two banter and fight each other during a massive prison riot. Then, after they escape, they continue to want to beat each other to a pulp. It's only after Shaw helps save Vin Diesel's oddly-named baby he becomes a Face (Good Guy). So, your typical bromance?
This spin-off news comes immediately after Universal announced that they'd be pushing back Fast 9 to April 10, 2020. Coincidence? Highly Unlikely. It seems as if this was Universal's plan from the moment Fate of the Furious ended. While it could end up being the best for all parties, considering Diesel and Johnson's dislike for each other, not everyone is on board.
Take it away, Tyrese!
