A young actor is getting his big break as Warner Bros. has cast one of Disney Channel's up-and-coming stars to play Billy Batson in DC's Shazam!. More on Asher Angel, below!
The last couple of weeks has proven that Warner Bros. is fast-tracking DC's Shazam! film to the big screen. First, we had director David F. Sandberg revealing the April 2019 release date on Reddit. Then, we got the surprising news that Zachary Levi would be playing the titular role. Last week, we heard that Mark Strong was in talks to play the villain, with Grace Fulton nabbing a lead role. Now, WB has cast Asher Angel to play the main character, Billy Batson.
This is a big break for Angel who recently broke into the industry starring as Jonah Beck in the Disney Channel show, Andi Mack. Before then, he had a couple of guest appearances in shows you most likely never heard of. Now, the relatively new actor is getting a featured role in a big budget movie, opposite the likes of Zachary Levi, Grace Fulton, and possibly Mark Strong.
Angel will be playing Billy Batson, the young man who is able to transform into the magical superhero Shazam!, just by uttering his name. Shazam! is actually an acronym for the many Gods he pulls his power from (Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury).
Word is, Shazam! is likely to begin shooting next year, in February, to meet the April 5, 2019 release date!
