The two men responsible for creating Game of Thrones on HBO are being handed the keys to their own Star Wars film series! More within!
It's not just Rian Johnson that gets to create his own Star Wars film series, anymore!
D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, better known for the creators of the Emmy Award-winning Game of Thrones series on HBO, have been given the go ahead by Disney and Lucasfilm to create their own Star Wars film series. The duo will write and produce their own series that will remain separate from Rian Johnson's series and the episodic Skywalker saga, and they seem overjoyed by the prospect.
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
Now the key words to highlight here are "As soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete." that means it's going to be some time until they'll be able to get started on this project, as the final season of Game of Thrones has been delayed to 2019. Despite that, Disney isn't letting a timetable sway them from giving these two the keys to a galaxy far, far away.
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
With their knack for adapting written work into compelling visual experiences, it's a small wonder why Lucasfilm and Disney hired them to create their own Star Wars series. The question will be whether they will create something original or potentially adapt one of the books that's still canon. Many were clamoring for Rian Johnson to create an Old Republic film, but doesn't that seem right up Weiss and Benioff's sleeves?
There are no release dates set for this series, but stay tuned to Cinelinx for more as this develops!
