M’Baku is set to step into the cage as internet and MMA sensation Kimbo Slice!
Back in February Black Panther broke records and introduced us fully to the world of Wakanda. One of the break out characters and stars of the film was Winston Duke as M’Baku. Duke once again brought the “Man Ape” to the fight against Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, but now it looks like he is ready to step up and fight in a whole new way.
In an exclusive from Deadline, we have now learned that Winston Duke has signed on to play Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson in a biopic about the fighters life tentatively titled “Backyard Legend”.
Kimbo Slice rose to fame along with YouTube in a string of backyard street fights. He fought his way into the UFC and MMA world by joining the Ultimate Fighter reality series “Heavyweights” where he competed on Quinton “Rampage” Jackson’s team against Rashad Evans’. Though he didn’t make it to the finals he still gained a contract with the UFC and had a few professional fights. Tragically he passed away in June of 2016 from heart failure.
Andy Weiss(White Boy Rick) is writing the screenplay, and Kimbo’s longtime manager and friend, Michael Imber , will serve as Executive Producer along with Winston Duke, who is excited for the project. Speaking about it Duke Said:
“I’m looking forward to exploring Kimbo’s story and interrogating the expectations society places on men like him who are their own special breed of hero.”
Next up for Duke is Jordan Peele’s BlumHouse Horror-thriller, US, alongside Lupita Nyong'o and Elizabeth Moss. It is set to be released March 15, 2019 by Universal Pictures.
