This morning brings a new trailer for Sony's Venom film, showcasing significantly more anti-hero action and a better look at how the comic film will play out. Come inside to take a look!
Despite being such a well known comic book character, Venom, as a film has an uphill battle in terms of finding an audience. The villain/anti-hero is one of Spider-Man's most iconic characters, but since this film has nothing to do with Spider-Man and won't feature the wall-crawler (or even acknowledgement of him as far as I've heard), it'll be interesting to see how well his story can be told.
Because of this, fans have been more critical in terms of the film's marketing so far. I've always been intrigued by the idea for the film and with each trailer/image, I think the film has looked better. This morning's trailer is no different, though it does have some issues:
We finally get to see the "villain" Venom will be facing in the film. While many were expecting it to be Carnage (though he might still make an appearance), we learned during SDCC that Riz Ahmed will be playing another Symbiote, Riot. As a nerd who grew up loving all the Symbiote action in Spider-Man comics, it's really neat to see them interacting and fighting in live-action.
The only problem I'm having with this trailer is that it's tonally all over the place. For the most part it's trying to maintain a darker/grittier tone, but there's a lot of goofiness in play with Eddie talking to himself. Not to mention the entire final scene with Venom and the convenience store robber comes off entirely as a comedic piece, even though he eats someone's head. It's just an odd combination and makes the trailer seem off balance. In all, however, I'm still digging it and curious (hopeful) to see if they're able to pull it off.
One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award® nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.
Venom hits theaters on October 5, 2018.
