Warner Bros. has cast their villain! Ewan McGregor will be the face behind Black Mask in Birds of Prey! More within...
The Birds of Prey cast is rounding out quite nicely, as Warner Bros. has put a lot of focus into making the All-Female Crime Fighting team-up a reality. With Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) already in the fold, Warner Bros. quickly added Dead Pigs Director Cathy Yan to helm the project. Since then, they've added Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Black Canary), Rosie Perez (Renee Montoya/The Question), and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Huntress), with just Cassandra Cain/Batgirl/Black Bat/Orphan left to be cast. While we wait for the last member of the Birds of Prey to be cast, Warner Bros. has decided to name the man who will be the main antagonist for this film, Black Mask.
Warner Bros. has announced that acclaimed actor Ewan McGregor will play the Gotham mobster Roman Sionis a.k.a. Black Mask.
Roman Sionis, better known by his criminal alias Black Mask, is a longtime enemy of Batman and one of the most prominent figures in Gotham City's organized crime. Once a member of Gotham's social elite and president of makeup giant Janus Cosmetics, Roman's own poor business sense led to a series of decisions that largely destroyed his reputation as both. Humiliated, Roman sought revenge on those he perceived to be responsible for his misfortunes - namely, Bruce Wayne and his company. To this end, Roman created the identity of the crimelord named Black Mask, as well as the criminal organization known as the False Face Society.
Black Mask has always been a B villain, compared to the vault of premiere Batman villains, but adding a talent like McGregor to play him truly raises his stock. It's yet another postive step forward for Warner Bros. and DC, which has been trudging through what has been a rough start to their DC Entertainment Universe. The iconic watertower brand has ultimately turned to Walter Hamada to steer the ship straight and has since seemingly done so, as excitement has grown for films like Aquaman, Joaquin Phoenix's Joker, and of course Birds of Prey.
Ewan McGregor is also slated to work on another Warner Bros. project, the sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep.
Birds of Prey is set to release February 7, 2020!
