Shrek and Crew Are Heading for a Revival

Universal Pictures is looking to bring the Shrek franchise (along with Puss n' Boots) back to life with a "reboot" of the iconic Ogre and have chosen Despicable Me's producer to take charge of it. Come inside for more information!

It's crazy to think that the last Shrek movie we got, Shrek Forever After, was nearly ten years ago. I mean, I don't think of the first Shrek film as being all that old, but here we are. After all that time it seems inevitable that the series is getting a reboot. Variety has the report that Chris Meledandri, the producer behind many of Illumination Entertainment's most popular films (Minions, Despicable Me, Secret Life of Pets, etc.), has been tasked by Universal Pictures to bring the Shrek franchise, which includes the Puss n' Boots spin-offs, back to life.

It's important to emphasize, despite the verbage used, that this is seemingly being tooled as a revival and not an actual reboot. Meledandri himself says that fans can (hopefully) expect the original cast to come back together:

“When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations. The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.”

I'm feeling a bit torn about this. On one hand, I really love the Shrek films. They were fun, hilarious, and featured genuinely great messages for audiences to enjoy. Seeing the original cast back together for another adventure sounds like a lot of fun. On the other hand, however, I'm not sure where the franchise could really go, that hasn't been covered before without diverging too greatly from the series' roots. It doesn't seem like there's an easy solution, but that's not stopping them from moving foward!

What do you think about seeing a new Shrek and/or Puss n' Boots movie? What would you hope to see out of it?
