First Pacific Rim Trailer is Ridiculous in All The Right Ways

Consider yourselves blessed.  It's that magical time of year where movie studios are anxious to show off everything they've got coming up next year.  This week has not only given us new Man of Steel, The Lone Ranger, and (at some point) the full Star Trek Into Darkness trailers, now we've got our first look at Guillermo del Toro's insane robot vs. monster film, Pacific Rim

My absolute love of monster movies is well documented.  It's a genre I grew up with and continues to fascinate me well into my adulthood, so I've been keeping a close eye on del Toro's upcoming Pacific Rim, because it's all about giant monsters and giant robots duking it out (with tons of VFX).  It's just the sort of thing that's up my alley.  Sadly, for the most part, there hasn't been much to look at.  Outside of a handful of pics, we've been left in the dark.  Fortunately, the first trailer makes up for it in spades:

That's a lot of stuff going on.  I'm so glad he's not taking the normal route with this trailer and merely teasing glimpses of the monsters and robots.  Instead, we see some all out brawls and the shere craziness that is bound to ensue in this film.  It looks ridiculous, and I mean that as the highest compliment.  It looks like the kind of bat-shit crazy creature feature Hollywood has been trying to succeed with for years.  While some films have gotten close, this trailer makes me think Pacific Rim is going to succeed without any issues.

Here's to hoping I'm right!  Here's all the official info (and the UK embed in case the iTunes one doesn't work for you):

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

So what do you guys think of this trailer?

It managed to more than make back its production cost and will be followed up by the inevitable sequel. Sam Raimi's prequel to the 1939 classic now hits Blu-ray and DVD, giving…

Eric's Blu Review: Jack The Giant Slayer Bryan Singer has never been a filmmaker whose work I've celebrated and adored. It's not that his films aren't entertaining to some degree. However, they always seem to have an issue with pacing, which could just as well be blamed on the writers he chooses to work with. Most of…

Rated: Now You See Me (2013) At their core, blockbuster films are known for being over-the-top, loud, and brash. Now You See Me is an attempt at making a smart one. Unfortunately, “summer blockbuster” and “smart” are rarely used in the same sentence. Now You See Me is no exception.
