Kevin Feige Talks About Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet

Fans who’ve been hoping to see the Infinity Gauntlet storyline ever since Thanos made his appearance in The Avengers, may be in luck. Marvel’s cinematic Head Honcho Kevin Feige says that the MCU is building to a Phase Three conclusion featuring the five Infinity Gems.

Kevin Feige, the Head of Marvel Studios who oversees all of their films, is talking about what’s in store for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and about the Infinity Gems in particular. Ever since Thanos made his brief appearance in the ending credit sequence of The Avengers, fans have wondered what role he’ll play in the MCU. Many expected him to be the bad guy in the Avengers sequel, but that slot has been filled by Ultron. So where does that leave Thanos? Fans have been hoping to see the Infinity Gauntlet storyline in film. Well, according to what Feige has to say, that may be where the overall plan of the MCU is headed.

The Infinity Gems are the overall plot gimmick (the McGuffins) which links the three phases of the Marvel master plan. In the comics, the five Infinity Gems are focal-points of power, each connected with a particular universal force—Time, Space, Reality, Mind and Soul. The cinematic interpretation of the Infinity Gems started with the Tesseract, which was important in Captain America: the First Avenger, Thor and the Avengers. Is the Tesseract (called the Cosmic Cube in the comics) one of the gems? Feige says, "Yes. It is an Infinity Gem. I don't know when we'll actually divulge that necessarily, but it's the space stone."

In phase two, we have the Aether, which figures prominently into Thor: the Dark World. When asked if this is one of the Infinity Gems, Feige simply says “Yes”. When asked if this Gem storyline would segue into the  Guardians of the Galaxy, and continue all the way through to Phase Three, Kevin Feige answered, "Well the answer to the question is both. It is both. And then, you know? Who knows? If they allow us to keep making movies, it will go a little bit further."

In the post-credit sequence of Thor: the Dark World, there is a scene which hints at the continuing story of the Infinity Gems, which will ultimately culminate in Thanos trying to take over the universe, possibly in Avengers 3.
