George Miller's long gestating sequel to the Mad Max franchise, Fury Road, hasn't exactly been on everyone's radar despite being such a big named property. Mostly that's because we've seen almost nothing from this movie aside from one still shot and it had no firm release date. Now, however, Warner Bros. has given fans a place to mark on the calendar, and wouldn't you know it...it's in Summer 2015.
I'm trying to figure out what's going on with this film. The 2015 release date seems kind of oddly placed mostly because just about all of the filming wrapped up last year (in 2012)! While they are currently doing some reshoots on the film, it's crazy to see how a big franchise like Mad Max could be mostly wrapped a year ago and still get a release date nearly two years down the road.
Part of it may have to do with the fact that 2013 puts it at exactly 30 years since the release of Beyond Thunderdome. Regardless of the reason, WB has now set George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road for May 15, 2015. This is a mere two weeks after Avengers: Age of Ultron and one week before Disney's Tomorrowland. Seems like a risky place to put it, but I'm sure WB is banking on the brand name to bring in the crowds.
There's very little information on the film right now, but here's how the director/creator described the film's plot:
“Mad Max is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa. This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived.”
What do you guys think of this release schedule? Are you bummed or excited?
