Looks like 20th Century Fox is very happy with Matt Reeves and what he's done with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (set to release later this year) as they've gone ahead and inked a deal with him to return for a third outing in the revamped franchise.
Fox struck gold with Rise of the Planet of the Apes (my personal favorite film of 2011) and surprised critics and diehard fans of the franchise. Unfortunately the director of that film, Rupert Wyatt, didn't stay on to direct the sequel and the studios brought in Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) to helm Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I'm guessing they've enjoyed what he's done with the sequel, as last night (courtesy of Deadline) they officially announced he'd be returning to helm the next film in the franchise.
Reeves will also pen the script for the next movie along with Mark Bomback who had a hand in Dawn. Aside from that, that's all we know about the third film! There's no release date or title, but that's not unusual considering Dawn of the Planet of the Apes won't be hitting until July 11, 2014. So while we have a little bit to wait and see how Reeves does with the Apes universe, I'm just happy to hear Fox is planning ahead on the franchise.
What do you guys think about Reeves coming on for a third Planet of the Apes movie?
