When Furious 7 hit theaters and blew up the box office, delighting both fans and critics alike, James Wan become a very hot property for studios to track down. In early April, word came out that WB was courting the director to helm their Aquaman movie, starring Jason Momoa and later that month, we learned Sony was hoping to snag him for Robotech. Guess what? He’s doing both! It’s been made official now, and he’s inked deals with both studios to direct these high profile films.
“The Aquaman film will be a major tentpole picture for us and James’s span of work has proven him able to take on any manner of project, bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice to the material,” said Greg Silverman, Warner Bros’ president.
First up, however, James Wan will direct The Conjuring 2 that’s schedule to hit next year and will then turn his attention to Aquaman, which has a July 27, 2018 release date scheduled. Once he’s finished on the superhero adventure, he’s moving over to Sony’s Robotech. This is how you know these studios wanted the man, in that they’re both willing to wait in order to get him. It’s kind of surprising on Sony’s side, as we’d heard they were wanting to fast-track a Robotech film, but I guess they’re willing to hold off for now.
Slowly but surely, DC’s slate of films is starting to fall into place with solid directors in place for their films. Now we just have to hope that they can pull all of the stories together in a fun way.
