Well…this is interesting. Looks like the actors who were cast to play the leader of the Ninja Turtles group and their Master, will have only been providing the mo-cap work and others will be lending their voices to the roles. Pete Ploszek was cast as Leonardo with Danny Woodburn brought on to be Master Splinter during filming of the movie. Now, Deadline has broke the news that their voices will be replaced in the final film.
Johnny Knoxville (Jackass, Bad Grandpa) will be taking over the role of Leonardo, the lead Turtle; while Tony Shalhoub (Monk) will be voicing the wisened mutated rat, Splinter, to guide the teenagers on their quest to defeat Shredder. According to Deadline, the actors originally hired on were only promised the option to portray the characters while filming and that their voices were always open to being recast.
Even if that’s the case, it still seems kind of sucky, especially for Ploszek who’s trying to really get his career off the ground. I guess that’s the way things work in the movie business. As for the casting itself, I’m interested. While I wouldn’t normally think of Johnny Knoxville as my first pick for the voice of Leo, I wasn’t sold on any of the voice casting for the new TMNT cartoon show either (Jason Biggs), and those have all turned out to be amazing. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

What do you guys think of these new voices for the film?
