Well, this is kind of a bummer. Last year’s X-Men: First Class was one of my favorite films of 2011, and ranks pretty high on my list of overall great comic book movies. Naturally I was ecstatic about a sequel being made (especially from the Days of Future Past storyline), and I had assumed that Matthew Vaughn would be back to direct the sequel. In fact, I think most people assumed that was going to be the case. The story comes from Deadline and here’s what they report:
Fox already has the script for X-Men: First Class–Days Of Future Past, and set to return is Fox’s First Class cast that includes Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence. Fox hopes to make the July 18, 2014 release date it set for the sequel, but it will have to find a director quickly. I’m not exactly sure why Vaughn is bowing out, but he is pretty picky on projects that he directs.
I’m always hesitant about a sequel when the original director doesn’t return, especially if it was good. It’s not that the new director might be terrible (though that occasionally happens), it’s that it’s hard to replicate the magic of that first film, without the original director present. Not all is lost, however, as it Bryan Singer is atop the studio’s list of replacements.
Fans have long clamored for Singer to return to the X-Men franchise, and now they may get their wish. We’ll just have to see how this one pans out. In the meantime, how do you guys feel about this?
