CraveOnline managed to nab this exclusive interview, but for the purpose of this, I’m going to re-post a couple of his more interesting responses. First and foremost, Burger has said that he really wants to please the fans with the Uncharted movie, who were understandably wary after hearing David O. Russell’s ideas which seemed completely opposite of what the game established. When asked if he’d be carrying anything over from O. Russell’s script, he had this to say:
“No, I haven’t seen his screenplay on it. Mainly we’re beginning from scratch and going back to the videogame. Because there’s a lot of cool stuff, actually, from the videogame, if you know it…It’s really one of the most cinematic videogames, and one that has really developed characters. So, you know, there’s a lot of cool, really intense things that, if they work for the film’s story, I want to use them.”
Beautiful! Unlike Russell, who really sounded like he’d never even played the games (and if he did, didn’t think the story was anything good), Burger really sounds like he knows what he’s talking about. I can tell you, already, I’m ten times more excited for this film than I was when Russell was attached.
He’s 100% right and that’s a big reason why so many fans were upset before. The Uncharted games are very cinematic and tell a very engaging story. When Russell wanted to change all of that and act like it was a good thing, people were pissed. This remark alone, should settle a lot of lingering fears in fans.
On top of the story, fans were also very adamant about the lead character of Nate Drake being portrayed by Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle). It’s understandable; even the game developers have said that a lot of the inspiration for Drake’s character came from Nathan Fillion’s character in Firefly. So the interviewer brought up the topic and this was Burger’s response:
“I’ve seen a little bit of that, yes. That was brought to my attention. So, you know, I think he’s a good actor. I think there’s a lot of really good actors who don’t even look like [Nathan Drake] who could play it! Where we are right now is that we’re literally starting from scratch on the screenplay, and I think that once we finish it, then we’ll go to actors and see who’s available and who’s right for the parts. Whenever that happens.”
It’s a fairly safe answer, but he’s right. They just aren’t far enough along on this project to start casting. He’s telling fans that he’s aware of the support for Fillion, but that we should trust him to make the best decision possible. On the whole, he seems to be handling things fairly well so far. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see what comes next, but with them starting back from scratch, it may be a little while yet before we get more news. So what are your thoughts so far?
