In a year full of biopics, Renée Zellweger appears poised to present a command performance as Judy Garland, beloved by many and known as “the world’s greatest entertainer.”
The film and the trailer focus on the latter part of Judy Garland’s life in 1968 as she begins a five-week singing engagement in London. We’re shown different glimpses of Judy’s life through the years as a haunting rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” plays in the background.
The trailer frankly looks incredible. Modern biopics have become very good at matching the star to their real life counterpart, but it’s still spooky to see just how much Renée Zellweger looks like Judy. Based on this preview, Judy looks like it has the potential to be a can’t-miss film when it premieres this fall.
Winter 1968 and showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform a five-week sold-out run at The Talk of the Town. It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in The Wizard of Oz, but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown. As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through. Even her dreams of love seem undimmed as she embarks on a whirlwind romance with Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband. Featuring some of her best-known songs, the film celebrates the voice, the capacity for love, and the sheer pizzazz of “the world’s greatest entertainer.”
Judy is directed by Rupert Goold and stars Renée Zellweger as Judy Garland. Judy is scheduled to be released on September 27th, 2019.
