Talk about an unexpected turn of events! Lucasfilm/Disney are apparently so happy with the work Rian Johnson has done on Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, they’re giving him an entirely new trilogy of films to create. The news just landed, revealing that Johnson will write and direct the first film with Ram Bergman on to produce, and that these new films will sit outside the Skywalker saga films:
In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.
New characters and new adventures in an entirely new trilogy sounds pretty damn exciting to me and I’m eager to see what all they’re going to explore. Will they take place in a different time period, or be analagous to the events of the other films, but focusing on something else entirely? At this point, it’s all up in the air, and there’s no release date set for these films.
Considering Episode IX is slated to hit in 2019, and potentially another standalone in 2020, I’m guessing this trilogy will kick off sometime after that. At this point, us Star Wars fans should be used to waiting, but this is exciting news nonetheless!
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
What do you hope to see in this new Star Wars trilogy from Rian Johnson?
