Sony Spider-Verse in the Midst of an Early Overhaul

This October we will be treated to our second incarnation of Venom on the big screen. The first time saw Topher Grace fail miserably, as iconic Spider-Man villain. This fall we will Sony takes another shot at anti-hero with Tom Hardy. With Spidey tied up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Disney/Marvel, Sony is in the market to build around Venom. With plans for Kraven, Morbius, and a Silver Sable & Black Cat film, at least they were in the works.

Silver & Black” was set to follow a mercenary, Silver Sable, who runs a company that hunts war criminals, and Felicia Hardy, the Black Cat. Now, according to Variety, it looks like Sony is separating the duo in favor of solo films. Black Cat will likely be the first of the two, should Venom hit his mark.

Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Secret Life of Bees) was set to write and direct “Silver & Black,” however she will probably move from writer/director, and shift into a producer of both the Black Cat and Silver Sable films. She will be replaced by another female director according to Sony.

President of Columbia Pictures Sanford Panitch spoke on the project saying:

“We’re focused on being faithful to the comics, we believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film. Spider-Man connects to a lot of the characters, there are villains, heroes, and antiheroes, and a lot are female characters, many of whom are bona fide, fully dimensionalized, and utterly unique. We feel there’s no reason the Marvel characters shouldn’t be able to embrace diversity”

The idea seemed to be forming that Venom would be the first Sony film that was rated R. While they do have plans to make a few superhero films like a Logan or Deadpool and aim for more adult audience. However it now looks like that Venom will hit in the PG-13 range, maybe a hard PG-13, but a PG-13 nonetheless. Probably in hopes that a crossover with Spider-Man will hit in the future, maybe joining in with the rest of MCU.

While the future of what is allegedly being dubbed internally as Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters, or SUMC, is still in the air, we will have to wait until October 5, 2018 to see how it will play out.
