The next big DC film to come to the screen will be a direct sequel to Man of Steel, although the main character will have to share the title with an even more popular hero. According to screenwriter David S. Goyer, the planned Superman follow-up has been given the title Man of Steel 2: Superman vs. Batman. The title may change in the future but for now, this seems to be the unofficial working title for the project.
The title hints at animosity between the two eponymous heroes. This goes hand-in-hand with the previously released information that the story will be loosely based on Frank Miller’s lauded Graphic Novel mini-series The Dark Knight Returns. Every comic fan knows that the two characters were philosophically opposed to each other in that classic series, and ended up coming to blows, with Batman coming out on top. Don’t necessarily expect the same result this time, because this is a Superman sequel, not a Batman comic. However, given the popularity of Batman after the Nolan/Bale triology, it’s not outside the realm of possibility.
The film will be directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan. This movie is taking the 2015 release slot originally reserved for the Justice League, a much-anticipated project that has been pushed back to 2017, thus cancelling the expected one-on-one summer box office battle between Avengers 2 and the Justice League. Now it will be Man of Steel 2: Superman vs. Batman which will have the daunting task of tackling the Avengers sequel. If anyone can do it, it’s Superman and Batman.
Man of Steel 2: Superman vs. Batman is expected to be the springboard which will launch the Justice League franchise, so don’t be surprised if there are one or two other costumed cameos in the film.
