To the excitement of Stephen King fans everywhere, the first trailer for Doctor Sleep, the official sequel to The Shining, was released today!
Set a number of years after the events of The Shining, a now grown-up Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor), finds himself entangled with a cult who feeds on children with psychic powers similar to his own. At the same time, he also confronts what happened in the Overlook Hotel when he was a child.
The trailer for Doctor Sleep, as you might expect, has a number of visual callbacks to The Shining, though whether these are actual scenes from the 1977 film or recreations I can’t say. I think it’s good that the trailer contains so many references to the original film, because it helps remind the audience what Doctor Sleep will be building upon as the story of Danny continues. Also, I love that the trailer ends with Danny sticking his face through the smashed door in the hotel, almost recreating the iconic “Here’s Johnny!” scene from The Shining.
I have mixed feelings on Stephen King’s work, but I’m intrigued by Doctor Sleep. The film is directed by Mike Flanagan, and stars Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, and Kyliegh Curran.
Doctor Sleep is scheduled to be released on November 8, 2019.
