So as you can all tell It IS worth my while and I am Friday, last class, schoolboy happy about this. If you haven’t already guessed I love the Purge series and I’ve been waiting for more info on this movie since the concept had changed slightly from when the 4th movie in the series had been announced.
The original title for the movie was The Purge: The Island. It was supposed to be the story of the new founding father’s magnificent idea to help a dying economy by creating a national holiday where citizens could commit crimes, any and all crime – including arson, rape, and murder – would be legal for one night, every year. And this first purge would be centered around … you guessed it (or maybe you didn’t) Staten Island.
Writer James DeMonaco had this to say when interviewed about The Island:
“I was wondering how you get people to stay for the first Purge, and what they do is they start monetizing it. People from Staten Island can easily go to Brooklyn for the evening, so what they do is start promising very decent sums of money for the very poor people in the neighborhood. It becomes a monetization of murder and violence, incentivizing killing and keeping people around for them to be victims. So you see the inception of how grotesque the idea of the Purge is, and the manipulation upon the society.”
In January 2018 we got the first poster for the movie and it had undergone a title change and I for one loved it. With the current political climate, the way it was, using the Iconic red hat with white stitched lettering was pure genius. Also seeing as how there were a few weeks everyone thought there could potentially be a civil war in this country didn’t hurt this marketing ploy either.
In the trailer (and from the title, DUH!) we see that they are sticking with the idea of the first purge, however it seems that the population is very resistant to the idea of murder in low economy areas so the government sends in ringers, instead of the original story idea of just paying people to go wreak havoc. Of course, the groups that were against the purge in the first place catch on and it’s a fight to stay alive while taking out military soldiers and the random civilian that happens to be in the streets purging at the time.
The purge is scheduled for release July 4th, 2018
