The ‘This Means War’ Trailer Pretends Two Men Would Really Fight Over Reese Witherspoon

In most cases, a movie featuring both Chris Pine and Tom Hardy would get me excited. When that movie involves them trying to win the heart of Reese Witherspoon…that’s a different matter entirely. The official trailer for This Means War has premiered and you can watch it below. If you dare, anyway.

The official synopsis is as follows:

The world’s deadliest CIA operatives are inseparable partners and best friends until they fall for the same woman. Having once helped bring down entire enemy nations, they are now employing their incomparable skills and an endless array of high-tech gadgetry against their greatest nemesis ever – each other.

This Means War is obviously an attempt to get couples into the theaters by appealing to both genders and what Hollywood assumes they want (brain-dead action for the dudes, “chick crap about love or whatever” for women). And you know what? It’ll probably work. For those of us who like our movies to be legitimately good though, this looks to pose a problem. It feels very generic and the comedy aspects are not only uninspired but not funny to boot. The action looks competent, love him or hate him but McG is good with action, but same could be said for a lot of bad movies like this. And then there’s the fact that Reese Witherspoon is the object of their affection; that’s just my own bias coming into play but I personally wouldn’t go to the trouble of using a drone plane to spy on her and my best friend. But on the bright side, at least Katherine Heigl didn’t end up in the role; then the movie would lose all of its believability.

This Means War opens everywhere February 17, 2012 for President’s Day Weekend.
