Chris Carter, the mastermind behind the classic The X-Files TV series, is planning a new series for next fall. This will not be his first attempt in recent years to get back into the realm of television. Last year he pitched a series called “Unique”, about a female paranormal investigator but it was deemed too much like the X-Files, as well as like Haven. That idea has faded. Now Carter has a new concept in the making called “Aftermath”, which is–as the title implies–about the aftermath of a massive, world-changing event. It sounds like an intriguing idea, until you recall series such as the Event, Flash-Forward, Invasion and the 4400, or even the current series Revolution. The post-Big Event genre has grown in recent years, with mixed results.
Can Carter take an often used premise and breathe new life into it so that it grabs viewer’s attention? Chris Carter has made one excellent show (X-Files), a mediocre one (Millennium) and a bad one (The Lone Gunmen) so it’s a flip of a coin as to whether or not this planned new show will fly but let’s hope that Carter can recapture some of that old magic and bring us another winner! Maybe it’ll be as good as The X-Files was.
