Having acquired Lucasfilms, Disney is the new hub of Star Wars activity. While everyone is eager to see Star Wars: Episode VII in 2015, there’s another film coming before that, albeit animated and on TV. Disney is producing their new animated show Star Wars Rebels, which will debut this fall, after the release of a TV movie pilot film, which is due out this summer. The film and subsequent show will be done by the same production team which made Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
The animated will film will set up the premise of the show. What is the premise? Star Wars Rebels takes place during the long gap between Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith and Episode 4: A New Hope. As the film begins, the Galactic Empire has taken over many planets in the Outer Rim and the Death Star is the most feared weapon in the Galaxy. A band of renegade teens make an assault on the Empire, which motivates others, ultimately leading to the early days of the Rebel Alliance.
Executives for Disney have this to say…”It’s hard to believe it’s already been a year since we acquired the extraordinary Star Wars franchise, but we’re well on our way to expanding that epic saga to thrill fans and introduce its iconic characters to a new generation with fantastic new storylines.”
They go on to say…” As with Marvel, the rich universe of Star Wars has tremendous creative potential for the entire company. While the world eagerly awaits Episode VII to open in theaters, we’re introducing Star Wars Rebels to television audiences this summer with a movie and a series of shorts on Disney Channel, followed by a continuing series on Disney XD.”
