DVD REVIEW: My Little Pony: Adventures in the Crystal Empire

The ponies of Equestria band together to protect the ponies of the Crystal Empire from an old enemy. Adorable cuteness ensues. As seen on the HUB TV network.

All hail the ponies of Equestria! The HUB TV network cartoon that rebooted the much-loved My Little Pony franchise has earned a loyal, if not fanatical, following of fans of both sexes. If you think the show is merely a vehicle for selling toys or keeping little girls occupied for 30 minutes, think again.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is an extremely well-done, entertaining cartoon that earns the following it has. The art direction is colorful and uniquely stylized, the animation is first-rate, and the voice acting is near-perfect. It makes My Little Pony one of the best animated shows on television.

This latest DVD release, Adventures in the Crystal Empire, consists of five excellent episodes, led off with a two-part episode about the Crystal Empire, a lost land where ponies get their power from a magical crystal heart. Twilight Sparkle and the ponies of Equestria must band together to save the Crystal Empire from an old enemy: a dark pony that banished their kingdom and gave them all amnesia.

The stories are fun and engaging, and the ponies have each developed into distinctive, appealing characters. As a Texan, I admit to being a fan of Applejack; it’s a Southern thing. Even the songs are cute and catchy; there may not be many of them, but they are well done when we get one.

At first glance, some may unfairly dismiss My Little Pony as too sweet and cute for its own good. Those folks miss the true charm of the show, which really tries to tell a decent story and give positive messages. The writing is witty, the voice acting is excellent, and the animation is quite good. My Little Pony is a great show to trust your little girls with. Besides, the theme song is unbelievably catchy. I still can’t get it out of my head.

For a standard DVD, the disc provides a nice video transfer. Colors are bright and vivid and the image is sharp. The audio choices are Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 mixes. The 5.1 mix is far better than it should be. Your little girl may not appreciate it, but it i a nice effort.

The disc is pretty scant on extras. You do get a sing-along version of one of the songs featured in an episode, and MLP coloring sheets are available to be printed off if you put the DVD in a computer drive.
