If you don’t already know, Carmen Sandiego began as an educational video game series which was released in 1985 by, the now-defunct company, Broderbund. In the game, you had to travel all over the world chasing down her henchmen to arrest them and hopefully at the end capture the nefarious Carmen Sandiego, Leader of the criminal organization V.I.L.E.
Now Netflix has developed ananimated show based on the criminal exploits of Carmen, but there seems to be some changes to the character. Let’s check out this video and see:
Well, it looks like Carmen doesn’t seem to be as bad as we thought she was. In a release from Netflix
Carmen is a modern-day Robin Hood traveling the globe and stealing from V.I.L.E. and giving back to its victims. Carmen is publicly perceived as a criminal by most law enforcement agencies – correction, make that a master criminal due to the sheer scale and theatricality of her heists. We will follow her escapades and get to determine not only where but WHO in the world is Carmen Sandiego?
It seems this series will delve further into the history behind Carmen and why she’s doing what she does. In this version she joins she joins V.I.L.E. to help people instead of creating the organization just because she wants to steal stuff. This is not the first time Carmen has been a tv series. The other shows were:
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego (1991-1995) a game show style program on PBS. The show was created partially in response to the results of a National Geographic survey that indicated Americans had alarmingly little knowledge of geography, with one in four being unable to locate the Soviet Union or the Pacific Ocean.
Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego (1997-1998) another PBS game show which was supposed to teach more historic events. Again, the reason the show was created was because American children were weak in this area.
Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego (1994-1999) was a Saturday morning cartoon on FOX as part of the FOX Kids block of programming. Although this was a more action-packed series they added things like trivia questions, languages, and definitions based on the episode kids were watching. Carmen was voiced by Rita Moreno.
The current incarnation of Carmen Sandiego is voiced by Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin). She is joined by Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) who will voice Player, a character who is described as Carmen’s chief accomplice and friend. In early 2018, Netflix also acquired the rights to a live-action Carmen Sandiego movie which Rodriguez is slated to play the title character. No other news of the live action movie has been released. The Carmen Sandiego animated series premieres Jan 18, 2019.
