Greg Berlanti‘s DC superhero universe, on the CW, has seen its fair share of established stars come and go throughout its tenure. Stars like Manu Bennett (Deathstroke), Tom Cavanagh (Harrison Wells), Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer), Arthur Darvill (Rip Hunter), just to name a few. Yet, the latest casting news out of DC Entertainment feels…bigger.
Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black, John Wick 2, Pitch Perfect 3, and The Meg) has been cast as Batwoman for CW’s annual Crossover event.
Batwoman’s alter ego is Katherine Kane, the daughter of two highly-respected members of the military. After the death of her mother, her father remarried into a wealthy home, causing Kane to become a socialite, much like Bruce Wayne. Following a relationship with Renee Montoya and an encounter with the Dark Knight, she decided to utilize her step-mother’s resources and take up the mantle as Batwoman. You can read more on her backstory, by going to the DC Comics wiki.
In addition to Rose’s involvement in the CW Crossover event, Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are working on bringing a Batwoman series to life, as Executive Producers. Alongside them is Caroline Dries, the writer of the series and executive producer. Geoff Johns‘ Mad Ghost Productions will also executive produce. While this series is definitely in its infancy, it’s likely that several networks, not just CW, will be chomping at the bit to get their hands on a gritty DC series that features an openly gay superhero with Ruby Rose as the lead. This series will likely be shown in the 2019-2020 slate.
