Warner Bros. Hires Cathy Yan to Direct Birds of Prey Film

Ever since Warner Bros. and DC earned massive amounts of praise (and money) for their adaptations of Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman, the studio has been shifting their attention to create films depicting the massive catalog of established female superheroes.  Even with movies like Gotham City Sirens, Batgirl, Harley Quinn vs The Joker, and even Suicide Squad 2 (to some degree) in the works, that’s not enough for DC.  They want to make a Birds of Prey movie.

According to a report from Deadline, after cycling through tons of qualified male directors, Warner Bros. and DC decided instead to go in a different direction and hire newcomer Cathy Yan to direct their Birds of Prey project.  The report states that there two huge factors in making this decision.  A. Yan made an incredible Birds of Prey pitch that impressed the studio.  B. Margot Robbie could not stress enough the importance of this film being led by a woman.

What makes this news so interesting is that Yan is relatively unknown to general audiences.  In fact, just a few years ago she was reporting for the Wall Street Journal in New York, Hong Kong, and Beijing and became the youngest reporter to ever make the front page on all three publications.  However, her real passion was in film, having written several short films before directing one of her own.  She made quite an impact with this first film, though.  Dead Pigs told the stories of several different people while a stream of dead pig carcasses made their way down the stream toward Shanghai.  It was so enamoring, it won the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting at Sundance.  Her work on this one film has now catapulted her to her own superhero film.

Thankfully, Yan already has the advantage of knowing who her leading lady will be, with Margot Robbie reprising Harley Quinn.  The rest of the Birds of Prey are supposed to have Black Canary, Huntress, and Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl, whom the woman who wrote the script for Birds of Prey (Christina Hodson) is currently working on a script for.  The idea is that this film could begin filming late this year or early next, depending on when Robbie finishes filming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and if WB can find the actresses who will don the other 3 masks.

There is no date for Birds of Prey set at this time.
