Now don’t get me wrong; I’ve lost the little patience and respect I’ve had for this man a long time ago. Lady in the Water blew, The Happening sucked, and The Last Airbender was one of the worst films I ever saw in a movie theater. Obviously, a man who has had such cinematic travesties as this should not be trusted. Yet…I want to believe. I want to believe that, out there, somewhere far far away, the old M. Night Shyamalan we knew and love, the one who gave us such gems as Unbreakable, The Sixth Sense, and Signs is still out there. Could this new project be the film that brings him back?’
Well, a good cast goes a long long way. Sony has announced via press release that Shymalan’s next film, currently titled One Thousand A.E, will star Will and Jaden Smith. Jaden Smith has been attached to the film since the beginning of the year, but Will has just been cast as…you guessed it, Jaden’s father. The two will co star in the film, and Will Smith will be producing it as well.
The press release says the film is the story of a post apocalyptic Earth 1000 years in the future (got your attention so far, right?) Because Earth is so apocalypticy, human kind has long since abandoned it. But a father and son (can you guess who plays which?) crash land on the now uninhabitable and utterly terrifying planet and most find a way to escape it. Sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it?
But then you hear that M. Night Shyamalan is directing the film and all that excitement is deflated. But like I said, I hope this can be a comeback for Shyamalan. For he is a great filmmaker…who just can’t write anything very well. Thankfully, he’ll be tackling this film this film with a co writer, Gary Whitta. He wrote Book of Eli, which was a competent and entertaining film. To words never associated with an M. Night Shyamalan script. That’s good enough in my book.
