Mere days after Shazam! Director David F. Sandberg leaked the release date on reddit, Warner Bros. and DC have announced that they’ve officially found their Shazam!. The news broke, today, in an exclusive report by THR. The report states that after bringing in several muscularly-built actors, the studio decided to go in a different direction.
Enter Zachary Levi.
The well-known actor got his big break in the NBC dramedy Chuck, where he played a regular joe-turned super agent. He later joined the Marvel Universe as Fandral in Thor: The Dark World and Ragnarok. Then, he continued to pad his superhero resume by starring in the forgettable NBC revival of Heroes, Heroes Reborn.
While he’s a good actor, with a resume to back it up, the choice is a head-scratcher. The eye test doesn’t really fit. Shazam! (named for Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury, for which he gains his powers from) is a pretty muscular hero. When the young Billy Batson shouts out his name, he turns into a hulking superhero with the mind of a child. While the acting chops are there to pull off a powerful hero with the mind of a kid, the bulk isn’t.
Then again, that’s what people said about Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and that was the best DC has had so far.
The next objective will be to find their Billy Batson and then get to filming. There isn’t a clear date for cameras to begin rolling but the idea is that it’ll start next February to meet the April 2019 deadline, Sandberg posted on reddit.
Until then, it’s time for Levi to hit the gym, fill his body with protein, and get them gainz. Perhaps he could train with the Rock. Then again, maybe not, as Dwayne Johnson will be his nemesis as Black Adam.
