The Casual Cinecast takes a look back at A Most Violent Year, HBO’s Leaving Neverland, Spielberg v Netflix, The Fall, & more!

Every episode of the Casual Cinecast usually starts of with a segment we like to call “What’s On Our Minds.” You guessed it. This is where the hosts discuss what’s been on their minds since the last episode. This week Chris wanted to get everyone’s thoughts on Steven Spielberg’s recent controversial statements about Netflix films, and how he believes they shouldn’t be eligible for consideration for the Academy Awards. Is Mr. Spielberg simply dead wrong, or does he actually have a few good points?

Meanwhile Mike watched the new HBO documentary Leaving Neverland, about the alleged sexual abuse acusations against Michael Jackson. Does this documentary make a convincing case, and is it worth 4 hours? Justin finally caught up on all five seasons of the Netflix show Bojack Horseman, starring Will Arnett. This means he finally gets to share some of his thoughts on the series as a whole. Did Mike and Chris build it up too much for him?

Then for the main review, film critic Matt Ward guests on the show to discuss A Most Violent Year. Matt was the winner of the Oscar-Bet 2019 contest we had on our show last week (Listen to our episode on Oscars reactions and The Casual Cinecast Awards for more on that contest). Find out why Matt chose this 2014 crime movie, directed by J.C. Chandor, as the film he wanted us to review on the show. Then after the main review stay tuned for a bonus review of The Fall, directed by Tarsem Singh. To be perfectly honest, this is actually a long-overdue listener chosen review as well.
