TMP's Summer 2012 Movie Guide: July

Honestly, if I was forced to judge Summer 2012 at first glance, I would say it was pretty weak.  Compared to 2011 and 2010, there's just not as many movies to look forward to.  While it seems easy to write off this Summer as a dud, I have three reasons why it might actually be awesome; The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, and Prometheus.  Honestly, that's all Summer 2012 needs in order to be one for the history books.  Even then, there's still more than enough films to warrant your attention this summer.  To help you sort through them all, we've once again compiled all the most interesting films of the season into four easy to read, informative guides.  For the next four days, we'll take you on a journey through the best cinema has to offer in Summer 2012.  Welcome to our Summer 2012 Movie Guide!

Today's guide will focus on the month of July, the most scarce of all the months.  But you know what?  The limited amount of options doesn't matter for one reason, and one reason only; THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.  Find out what we have to say about the biggest movie of 2012 (along with some other films too!) after the jump.

Don't forget to check out our MAY and JUNE guides as well!

The Amazing Spider-ManTheAmazingSpiderMan Poster

Release: July 4 (Wide)

Genre: Action/Adventure, Superhero

Rating: N/A (Probably PG-13)

Synopsis: Peter Parker, a normal, slightly geeky teenager, finds himself with great power after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Deciding to use his powers for good, Peter (a.k.a Spider-Man) sets out to defend New York City from a great menace with ties to his secret lineage.

In Ten Words: Spider-Man's origin story...with some new bells and whistles.

Logline: The Untold Story.

Cast: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Martin Sheen, Denis Leary, and Rhys Ifans

Written By: Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves

Directed By: Marc Webb

Trailer:

Antico-Meter: Cautiously Optimistic

Reasoning: Well I'm sad that Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 was canned for another reboot, everything I've seen thus far gives me hope that Webb and his team have nailed this character. I just hope the movie itself is good.

Expect: Spider-Man's Origin Story (again), A (Blonde!) Emma Stone, and some good ol' fashion Spider-Man quips!

SavagesSavages

Release: July 6 (Wide)

Genre: Crime Thrillers

Rated: R for strong brutal and grisly violence, some graphic sexuality, nudity, drug use and language throughout.

Synopsis: Two pot growers combat the Mexican drug cartel to win back their joint girlfriend.

Logline: N/A

Cast: Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, Blake Lively, John Travolta, and Uma Thurman

Written By: Oliver Stone, Shane Salerno, and Oliver Stone

Directed By: Oliver Stone

Trailer:

Antico-Meter: Excited

Reasoning: This movie looks so exciting and action packed for a director like Oliver Stone, and I'm curious what he's going to make out of this.  One thing for sure...Aaron Johnson looks incredible in this.  He doesn't even RESEMBLE Kick-Ass at all!  I have high hopes for this one.

Expect: Weed, Sex, the Mexican Cartel, and some very Pulp Fiction-esque elements.

IceAge4

Ice Age 4: Continental

Drift

Release: July 13 (Wide)

Genre: Animated Family Comedy

Rated: N/A (Probably PG)

Synopsis: Manny, Sid, Diego, Scrat, and all their friends embark on a grand

new adventure as the ice age ends and the group must come face to face with

the dawn of a new era.

In Ten Words: Somehow, these characters have lived through the ENTIRE

Ice Age.

Written By: Michael Berg, Jason Fuchs, and Mike Reiss

Directed By: Steve Martino and Mike Thurmeier

Trailer:

Antico-Meter: Eternally Not Caring

Reasoning: Look, Ice Age had its day in the sun—but this series has been around for a decade, and I'm honestly just sick of it.

Expect: More of the same, but with animal pirates!

TedTed

Release: July 13 (Wide)

Genre: Comedy

Rated: R for crude and sexual content, pervasive language, and some drug use.

Synopsis: When John was young, he made a wish that his beloved teddy bear would come to live.  To his astonishment, it did.  Unfortunately, John didn't know what he was in for later on with life, as he has to now deal with the alcoholic, bong smoking Ted and his refusal to leave his apartment.

In Ten Words: Seth MacFarlane's Naughty Bear.

Logline: N/A

Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Giovanni Ribisi, Mila Kunis, Joel McHale, and Seth MacFarlane

Written By: Seth MacFarlane, Alec Sulkin, and Wellesley Wild

Directed By: Seth MacFarlane

Trailer:

Antico-Meter: Cautiously Optomistic

Reasoning: Even though Family Guy has completely gone off the rails lately, I still believe that Seth MacFarlane is a funny guy.  I just hope Ted will be the thing that reignites MacFarlane's old fire once more.

Expect: Penis Jokes, Vagina Jokes, Boob Jokes, Weed Jokes, Beer Jokes, Racist Jokes—I'll stop there.

The Dark Knight RisesTheDarkKnightRises

Release: July 20 (Wide)

Genre: Action/Adventure, Superhero

Rated: N/A (Probably PG-13)

Synopsis: The Dark Knight returns in this epic conclusion to Christopher Nolan's trilogy of films, as Batman has to go toe to toe with the villanious Bane in one last ditch effort to save Gotham from complete destruction.

In Ten Words: It's the sequel to The Dark Knight...nuff said.

Logline: The Legend Ends

Cast: Christain Bale, Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, and Tom Hardy

Written By: Jonathan and Christopher Nolan

Directed By: Christopher Nolan

Trailer:

Antico-Meter: Through the Roof

Reasoning: If your not looking forward to The Dark Knight Rises, you are probably the worst person in the universe.

Expect: An epic conclusion to one of the best trilogies in cinema history.

Ruby SparksRubySparks

Release: July 25

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Rating: N/A (Probably R)

Synopsis: To deal with his crippling writer's block, a novelist creates a female character that is perfectly attuned to his personality, and somehow manages to make her will by shear force of will.

In Ten Words: Like Weird Science, but with writing instead of...y'know, science.

Logline: N/A

Cast: Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan, Antonio Banderas, Annette Bening, and Steve Coogan

Written By: Zoe Kazan

Directed By: Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris

Trailer:

Antico-Meter: Intrigued

Reasoning: Honestly, I wouldn't be very interested in this movie if it wasn't for the fact that it's by the two people who directed Little Miss Sunshine, a film I loved.  This is their first project since then, so I'm curious to see if Sunshine was a fluke, or if these two are just really, really talented.

Expect: Writer's Angst & Awkward Romance

Neighborhood WatchNeighborhoodWatch

Release: July 27

Genre: Action/Comedy

Rated: N/A (Probably R)

Cast: Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, Vince Vaughn, Richard Ayoade, and Will Forte

Written By: Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg

Directed By: Akiva Schaffer

Trailer:

Antico-Meter: Intrigued

Reasoning: Well the cast doesn't have me too excited, the screenwriters and the overall plot definetely have me intrigued.  Kind of a strange idea for a mainstream comedy, but I appreciate that.
