After enjoying a little break time, the Cinelinx crew is back to ring in the New Year with a look ahead to some of our most anticipated films of 2016, and why you should be excited as well. Come inside to check out our lists and add your own!
The start of a new year is always filled with promise. While not every film we're looking forward to seeing will be the success we had hoped, we can look ahead with nothing but optimism and hope. As such, a few members on our team decided to break down the films they're most looking forward to seeing throughout the year and corssing their fingers for:
Jordan: My 2015 in movies was pretty amazing, with the return of my beloved franchises and some impressive storytelling. While I had been looking forward to 2015 in movies for a while, 2016 is shaping up to be even more impressive. Here are a FEW of the films I can’t wait to watch.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Did anyone really think I wouldn’t put the next Star Wars movie on here? Besides being another Star Wars film, I’m super excited to see Rogue One because I want to see how they do a story OUTSIDE of the Saga films. The spin-offs have the potential to do something amazing and Rogue One has a lot to prove at this point.
Warcraft - I know not everyone (including myself) was blown away with the first trailer for Warcraft...But I’m still interested to see how this one plays out. Duncan Jones is a solid storyteller and there’s a lot of lore to play with in the Warcraft world. If he can combine the epic feel with characters and story, this could be a lot of fun.
Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice - I unabashedly enjoyed Man of Steel, and don’t understand the hate it gets. As such, I’m excited to see how that world expands into the larger DC universe, along with finally seeing Batman and Superman, along with Wonder Woman, sharing the big screen. It’s going to be a trip for sure!
A Monster Calls - No, this isn’t a big blockbuster, but it’s one I’m eager to see all the same. A Monster Calls is based off a book of the same name, and it’s one of the most poignant and touching stories about coping that I’ve read in a long time. I’m very interested to see if the movie can capture the same magic as the book.
Ghostbusters - This may surprise a few people, but I’m definitely excited to see the new Ghostbusters movie. It’s a great franchise, with a lot of potential for great stories, and I hope this reboot has the chops to do the series justice.
Honestly, narrowing this down to only five was incredibly hard, and I fluctuated on several. Movies like Captain America: Civil War and Suicide Squad are obviously films I want to see, but I feel like I know, generally, how those are going to play out and appeal to me.
Matt: Let me begin by saying, there are a lot of exciting movies coming out in 2016. Many of the movies that have been selected are big ones on my personal list like Rogue One, Batman v Superman, Civil War, Ghostbusters, and Suicide Squad. However, in the sake of keeping things different, I’ve formed a list of movies I’m really looking forward to that aren’t the “Big Blockbusters”.
Zoolander 2 - I absolutely loved the first Zoolander. I can’t tell you how many times I watched it but just know that in the days of Video Stores, I probably rented that movie 20+ times. The first movie was so dumb, it was hilarious, and that’s why I was thrilled they were making a second one. From the looks of the trailer, 2 looks to be bringing back most of the elements that made the first movie so funny and I, for one, can’t wait to see it!
Deadpool - So obviously this brings up the question of, “In a fight between Derek Zoolander and Deadpool, who would win?”. That’s an easy question Cinelinx reader, Deadpool! Don’t put it passed me to do a double feature, though. After the horrible tragedy that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, there were rumors that Ryan Reynolds was shopping around Hollywood to get a Deadpool movie done. Years later, the long-thought dead aspirations were revived and Fox finally greenlit a Deadpool movie fans can appreciate! Negasonic Teenage Waaaaa????
The Jungle Book - Jon Favreau’s adaptation of an old Disney classic comes to life on April 15 and so far the trailer looks incredible. Featuring a cast of Scarlett Johannson, Idris Elba, Giancarlo Esposito, Lupita Nyong’o, Christopher Walken, Ben Kingsley, and Bill Murray as Baloo, The Jungle Book could be quietly one of the best movies of 2016.
Doctor Strange - You may say that this could be construed as a “Big Blockbuster”. However, I don’t think this will have the same reach as Civil War will. The casting of Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme, has me positively giddy. Furthermore, the origin story for Doctor Strange is one of the best comic book origin stories I’ve ever read/seen so hopefully the movie will be just as good.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - J.K. Rowling’s prequel within the Harry Potter universe is being told with Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne as its leading man, Newt Scamander. Fantastic Beasts follows Scamander as he searches old New York for Magical Beasts that have escaped. I’ve loved the Harry Potter series and I’m excited that it’s continuing.
Dustin – Honestly I hope 2016 is a bit more exciting than 2015, and I think it will be. We have a bit more blockbusters and superheroes making a return throughout the year instead of being focused in groups, and some really big heavy hitters also returning. We also seem to have some interesting smaller films and comedies, so my hopes are high.
Batman v. Superman – I said it before and I’ll still say it even after watching Star Wars, I’m more excited for this film than anything! I’ve been waiting for this film to take shape ever since I was basically a kid and now that it is finally coming I seriously cannot wait! The trailer gave away a bit much, but I have hopes that we will see something even bigger in this duel! Plus we finally get to see Wonder Woman in action!
Deadpool – I don’t want to fill up my entire list with superhero films, but Deadpool has to be one I highlight. This R rated take on a super hero role is sure to be a thrilling ride, plus Ryan Reynolds seems to have put his heart and soul into this film to make it come to life! I really do hope it is good!
Warcraft – Of course coming from the gamer side of the site I have to list Warcraft simply because I truly want it to be good. Video game adaptations always suck because Hollywood has no idea how to approach it, but finally a movie that actually looks awesome is Warcraft. For the love of all video game gods, please be good!
Tarzan – The movie released a trailer and it almost looked like a Jungle Book trailer, but it was friggin Tarzan! I’m way more excited for my childhood favorite to be brought to life in a live action film!
Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising – This movie can be totally hilarious, or a very typical follow up bomb. I loved the first one as it had me busting up laughing the entire time, and I think the follow up has some real potential because Zac Efron and Seth Rogan compliment each other so well.
Honorable mentions – Captain America: Civil War (Spider-Man finally peeks his head in the Marvel Universe!), X-Men: Apocalypse, TMNT2, Suicide Squad (See I could have easily filled this list with comic book movies!) and mushy romance movies that are hit or miss!
Garrett - We had some great films in 2015 despite the onslaught of sequels and remakes. Unfortunately, the big name films in 2016 are more sequels and remakes. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, 2015 showed us that there could be creativity in these types of films, but the track record is working against them. I’m hoping that writers and studios have learned from their past mistakes, although more Spider Man films in the future suggests that they have not.
Silence - Scorsese is back (he never really left) doing what he does best: compelling historical dramas. The difference is that this one is something we haven’t really seen him do (a film set in Japan), yet it’s fitting to what he has done in the past (adapt novels to the big screen). Silence is the story of a 17th century priest in Japan. It stars Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, and Liam Neeson. If you aren’t excited for this, something is wrong.
Neon Demon - The next collaboration between Amazon and a big-name director will surely create an interesting result. This time it’s Nicolas Winding Refn, the man behind Drive taking a stab (literally) at horror. This one stars Keanu Reeves, Elle Fanning, and Christina Hendricks where Fanning is a model on the run from others who want to steal her beauty. It’s a unique idea, and Refn has the talent to inject some mind-blowing visuals to make this a must-see.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Is a Star Wars spin-off a necessity? No. It’s an obvious cash cow more than a story that needed to be told. Still, I’m interested in watching it. The setting will have a cool Star Wars retro vibe, and if The Force Awakens signifies the type of care that Disney is taking with their new property, I’m excited to see what they can come up with.
Ghostbusters - I’m a huge fan of Paul Feig, his last few films have been very entertaining. Combine his penanche for comedy with a talented female cast and a familiar premise, and you have a very compelling film. Yes, fans of the originals may be upset, but remakes/reboots are the norm these days and this one at least has some unique attributes working for it.
Story of Your Life - Denis Villeneuve’s next film (before Blade Runner 2), is science fiction. I’m excited to see how he approaches this genre, as he has shown a lot of talent so far. The cast includes Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. Prepare yourself for compelling characters, eye-melting visuals, and a competency in film structure that is rare these days.
There's no shortage of BIG movies coming out in 2016, but as always, there's a plethora of smaller films that could always surprise audiences and become our favorites. There's no telling what the year will bring, but from a movie lovers perspective, there's a lot to be excited about.
