Kojima Productions took the stage at E3 2018 during the Sony conference to show off Death Stranding. There were no follow up interviews or developer moments, just the trailer seen above. More information is expected to come tomorrow when Sony hosts a panel at E3 with Kojima Productions.
For now we just have to use yet another confusing and cryptic trailer to see what the game is about. The trailer shows, what we assume, the main character traversing some pretty breathtaking scenes before coming across the enemies of the game. There are several instances of them appearing in different ways, but we got several good looks at them this time. During his second encounter with the enemies, Norman Reedus’ character doesn’t seem to make it out and is taken by them. At the end of the trailer we got another addition to the super star cast with Lidnsay Wagner appearing. Kojima explains that even more stars are to be announced soon. Léa Seydoux had also made a brief appearance in the trailer.
The game seems to focus on a hero that isn’t particular “skilled” in any way. During one part of the trailer Sam, the main character, explains he only makes deliveries and Kojima seems to be playing on that roll of an average person growing with the game going on.
The first half and the last sequence in particular are most representative of the actual gameplay. There are some answers here too, as well as a chance to discover new mysteries. Some might have already picked up on this, but Sam is unlike any other hero you may have seen in games before. A typical hero is usually some sort of elite or someone with a military background. Sam is not. He is a working man of sorts — a hands-on professional. Someone with a skillset akin to a blue-collar worker. This is something you’ll intuitively understand once you play the game and control Sam. Herein lies our challenge, to create both a new form of gameplay and a hero that has never been done before.
The PlayStation Blog has also detailed a lot of what is going on behind the scenes of the game.
